There is a God, He loves you, and He wants you to know Him personally.

That’s it. Think for a moment about what that means: it means that there’s something more to life than the daily grind. It means that pain, disappointment, and suffering are not the end-all-be-all of your life. It means that Somebody loves you without asking anything in return—no matter how messed up your life is, no matter what you’ve done.

This Good News is the main point behind the Bible, and it’s not complicated. All you need to do to receive this Good News is believe it. Here’s how it breaks down:

  1. You, like everybody else on earth, have a natural desire to live under your own authority, not God’s. To use a religious word, you are a sinner.
  2. Your independence from God (sin)makes it impossible for you to know God all by yourself. God is perfect and good in every respect, and does not have regard for one who decides for oneself what is right or wrong. It doesn’t matter if you live your life indifferently or defiantly toward God—it’s enough to put you in opposition to God.
  3. God loves you, despite your desire to rule your own life, and wants to have a relationship with you. God came up with a solution to this sin problem—he sent his son Jesus who, through his death by crucifixion, absorbed God’s anger provoked by your challenge to his authority. After committing this act of sacrifice Jesus was raised from the dead, breaking the power of death and sin.  Because he did this, God has declared Jesus to be the rightful authority for this world.
  4. By simply believing in this—your sin, God’s love, Jesus’ sacrifice— and embracing Jesus as the authority for your life, you can enter a relationship with God. That means that God wipes clean forever your record of living under your own authority.  In addition, he leads and empowers you to live a new, transformed life—a life that’s based on something more meaningful than money or power or keeping up with the Joneses.
  5. This life isn’t all there is!  God has a plan to eradicate evil and to restore what he has created.   Those who choose to embrace God’s authority now will someday enjoy forever a new heaven and a new earth governed by the perfect rule of Jesus.

That’s the Good News: that there’s more to life than what you see, and you can be a part of it—through Jesus.
